The Nigerian Internet Registration Association (NiRA) has announced that there was a significant increase in the number of .ng domain names registered in January 2015. According to the president of the association, Mary Uduma, a total of 1,542 domain names were registered in January.
She said: “For the month of January 2015, 1,542 domain names were registered, 1,070 domain names were renewed and 41 domain names were transferred. When compared to January 2014, where 1,425 registered, 811 renewed and 49 transferred, we can say there was a slight increase in domain name activities in January 2015.”
With more appreciation of the Nigerian identity online as the year progresses, Uduma said more activities would be noted within the domain name industry.
She noted that as at 31st December 2014, about 18,000 domain names were registered although NiRA is targeting to achieve six million registered domain names in the next five years.
Uduma revealed this while inaugurating the Board of Trustees for the Ndukwe Kalu Foundation in Lagos.
Ndukwe Kalu was the pioneer NiRA President, who passed on in active service in September 2009. At the time of his burial, NiRA had promised the family that his name would be immortalised. This promise was finally fulfilled by inaugurating the Ndukwe-Kalu Foundation recently.
