How does VR Technology Work?

Have you ever wondered how a VR headset can make you feel as though you’re travelling the galaxy in a space ship even though you are actually sat right in your living room? Well, now you can find out once and for all.

The Basics

VR headsets, such as the Playstation VR and even the Oculus Rift are often referred to as being HMFDs. This means that they are head mounted displays- with the goal being to create a space that is life-size and without boundaries. The headset usually has two different displays, one per eye. These lenses focus and reshape the picture you see for each eye. This creates a stereoscopic 3D image and it also mimics how your eyes see the real world. If you want to find out how this works, then close one eye and then the other individually. This will give you an idea of how individual images dance around from side to side. One important way that VR headsets are able to increase immersion is by widening the field of view. If you had a 360-degree VR experience then this would be far too expensive and it would also not be necessary. A 100-degree view on the other hand would be more than enough to give you the ultimate experience and it would also help you to really immerse yourself in what is happening around you. NetBet casino and other casino sites can sometimes be viewed using a VR headset, not to mention that there have even been some casino-based VR apps released. This alone shows how far the technology has come and what could be in store.

Head Tracking

Head tracking essentially means that whenever you wear a VR headset, the picture in front of you shifts as you look up and down, or even side to side. This works from an X, Y and Z axis system. There a few different components that can help with this. For example, the PSVR uses 9 different LED dots which are around the headset. This helps the tracking system to have as little latency as possible. The Oculus on the other hand has 20 lights, and even though they are not as bright, they are certainly more reliable. Headsets can also be used to increase how immersive an experience is. 3D audio can be used via an app and this can also help you to tap into the technology even more.

Head tracking is usually only available in premium headsets. This is one of the many advantages that they have over cardboard headsets or even mobile VR headsets. Devices can also be used to try and track hands and their movement too. Infrared sensors are usually used for this and this boosts the experience even more. Take the Oculus Rift for example, this comes with a set of wireless controllers that make you feel as though you are using your hands in the VR system. You also have buttons, triggers and thumbsticks too.
