YouTube Makes Search Easier with Video Chapters and more

Two feature updates have been announced by YouTube to make it less tasking for users to find their desired content.

These updates are visual search features and easier discovery of foreign language videos with translations written in local languages.

Mobile users can now briefly watch a video by hovering around the thumbnail, a functionality that was only available for desktop users. Also, mobile users can browse chapters within a video, this means that users can automatically jump to a video chapter they’re interested in.

“Let’s say you’re looking for a good sourdough recipe and want to work on your kneading technique. With these new search results, you can see all the steps in the video, from feeding the starter to pulling the bread out of the oven — and skip right to the chapter on kneading,” the director of Product Management, Pablo Paniagua, said in a blog post.

For the foreign language feature update, it recommends videos subtitled in a user-preferred local language. For example, if a user speaks Icelandic and can’t find a good sourdough tutorial in their language, YouTube might recommend an English-language tutorial with Icelandic subtitles.

For starters, YouTube will supplement search results with English-language videos, and in the long run, expand to more languages.
