BlackBerry Suspends Roll-out of BBM for Android and iOS

BlackBerry has apologized to its expectant fans for issues in the suspension of its roll-out plan of the BBM service to Android and iOS users. The suspension is due to issues caused by unexpected load from 1.1million users of unauthorized copy of the BlackBerry for Android app.

According to earlier reports from BlackBerry, BBM for Android was to be released on Saturday, 21st September while BBM for iOS was to follow on Sunday, 22nd September; only for the iOS to overtake the Android in a surprise early release on Saturday, leaving millions of Android users more anxious than ever.

An unauthorized copy of BBM for Android was leaked and the feeling can only be described as ecstatic, as anticipated fans rushed to download. This caused the reported network problem for BlackBerry and also triggered the cancellation and subsequent suspension of the roll-out plan; even though iPhone users who already downloaded will still be able to use the BBM service.

Reimer wrote on BlackBerry’s blog: “Our teams continue to work around the clock to bring BBM to Android and iPhone, but only when it’s ready and we know it will live up to your expectations of BBM. We are pausing the global roll-out of BBM for Android and iPhone. Customers who have already downloaded BBM for iPhone will be able to continue to use BBM. The unreleased Android app will be disabled, and customers who downloaded it should visit www.BBB.com to register for updates on official BBM for Android availability. As soon as we are able, we will begin a staggered country roll-out of BBM for Android and continue the roll-out of BBM for iPhone.”
