No thanks to a viral video posted on TikTok, an Apple contractor has lost her job. This is the second time in a few months that Apple is firing a worker because of a social media post. The first instance was due to a derogatory statement an Apple executive made about what he does for a living.
In the case of the Apple executive, his response to an interview question quickly escalated to him losing his job. But in the case of Nylah Boone, the Apple contractor of focus in this article, a video she made and posted got her in trouble. With harmless intentions and the sole aim of encouraging women of colour that they can “work in this industry or work in this role”, she put out a “day in the life” video on TikTok.
The video generally put forth her morning routine and everyday office life at Apple. After posting this video, her contract with Apple did not get a renewal at the end of the month, prompting her exit from the company. This event took place a few months ago but came to the limelight again once the reason for the sack became clear to the media industry.
Understandably, there are rules and regulations governing Apple workers and contractors. One of which is Nylah Boone’s viral video broke, this involves not sharing videos taken within the company’s workspace. Although Nylah’s video did not show any sensitive information within the workspace, it remains unacceptable by company policies.
Identifying oneself as an employee with Apple is also unacceptable. So, there is a need to understand and abide by the policies of tech firms one might get to work with as a staff or contractor. Getting insight into what one can or can not do under the guidelines of one’s contract.
