Despite the instability at Twitter Inc, its new CEO, Elon Musk says that “Twitter 2.0: The Everything App” will see massive growth in about a year. Vintage Musk. But, he has figures to back this ambition, insisting that his platform will cross 1 billion monthly active users by 2022. Available statistics however show, that, Twitter has over 238 million active monthly users at the moment, leaving Musk and his team to attract around 700 million active users to Twitter.
In a reply to a user on the platform, Musk remains optimistic despite the doubts, saying “I think I see a path to Twitter exceeding a billion monthly users in 12 to 18 months”. To fuel this growth, Twitter 2.0 The everything app will see some new features. Among the list of features that we expect on the app are encrypted DMs, long-form tweets, a relaunch to the blue verification system, and so much more.
These features could potentially bring the numbers Musk aspires to reach to the platform in under 12 – 18 months. Also, reports say Musk is working to recapture advertisers who jumped ship when he took over control at Twitter. Speaking of jumping ship, Twitter seems to be losing users to the competition like social media platform Mastodon.
A few weeks ago, German-based Mastodon announced that it had reached over 1 million monthly active users. Not bad for a platform that is barely 6 years old and constantly facing the heat of competition from Twitter. The majority of the new users on the app are reportedly previous users of Twitter who no longer feel comfortable on the platform.
If things continue the way they are going at Twitter, the vision to cross 1 billion active monthly users by 2023 might be a taller order than Musk thought.
