Earlier this week, TechCity reported that Google would be giving $700m in compensation to its Play Store customers in a settlement case decided in the US.
This money will be used to pay back over 71 million Americans who use Android apps and have purchased something on Play Store between 2016 and now. Below are a few things to note about the payback from Google:
- Customers do not need to file a claim to get their share of this payout.
- To receive a refund, you must have a valid address in your Google payments profile within any of the 50 U.S. states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, or the U.S. Virgin Islands.
- If you bought an app or made an in-app purchase with your Google account from your registered address on Google Play between August 2016 and September 2023, you are eligible.
- Expect no less than $2. While the exact payout per person isn’t confirmed, all users are expected to receive a minimum of $2. Additional funds will be distributed based on individual spending on Google Play during the specified period.
At the moment, Google has earmarked $630m for the total payout and the remaining $70m to be given to states. Reports however suggest that the portion of the settlement allocated for consumers may exceed $630m.
There are no indications when the payout will roll out but Google said in a statement, that the “proposed changes will go into effect after the Court formally approves the settlement.”
