Google Grants N2.8 Billion to Boost AI Talent in Nigeria

The Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation & Digital Economy (FMCIDE) announced on Thursday that Google grants N2.8 billion to support Nigeria’s AI talent growth. This grant, awarded to Data Science Nigeria, aims to equip Nigerians—especially under- and unemployed youth—with essential AI skills and education.

This funding adds to Google’s ongoing support in Nigeria. Just last month, Google committed N100 million to the National Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Robotics (NCAIR) AI Fund. With this latest addition, Google’s total investment in Sub-Saharan Africa’s digital skills programs now reaches $5.8 million.

Boosting Digital Transformation in Nigeria

The Minister of Communications, Innovation & Digital Economy, Dr. ‘Bosun Tijani, expressed the importance of this support. He said, “This support from Google shows our commitment to making Nigeria a leader in AI innovation.”

By backing FMCIDE’s programs, Google grants N2.8 billion toward Nigeria’s AI-driven digital economy. This investment opens doors for Nigerians to gain the skills they need for global digital careers.

Key Programs Under the N2.8 Billion Google.org Grant

The Google.org funding will help Data Science Nigeria and FMCIDE implement several AI-focused initiatives:

  • DeepTech Ready Upskilling Program: This initiative aims to train 20,000 young Nigerians in advanced AI and data science, preparing them for careers in tech.
  • Experience AI Program: This program will empower 25,000 educators to teach AI to 125,000 young people, inspiring the next generation of innovators.
  • Government AI Campus Program: This program will equip public servants with AI policymaking skills, ensuring Nigeria’s strategies are both responsible and effective.

Building a Foundation for Nigeria’s AI Future

Earlier this year, FMCIDE hosted the National Artificial Intelligence Strategy (NAIS) Workshop. This event laid the groundwork for integrating AI into Nigeria’s economy and governance.

In addition to Google grants N2.8 billion, FMCIDE’s initiatives receive support from other partnerships. Recently, a $1.5 million AI initiative from Luminate, a global foundation, was launched to enhance informed decision-making across Nigeria.

With this funding, Nigeria strengthens its position as an AI innovation leader in Africa. Through these initiatives, Nigeria is moving closer to a future prepared for the global digital economy.
