Infinix Zero Review

Infinix Zero Review: The Infinix Zero (X506) is a dual SIM midrange smartphone launched by Infinix mobility in partnership with Konga and Etisalat. The partnership with Konga seem to confirm the new wave where OEMs partner with ecommerce platforms to exclusively sell their devices. We first witnessed that in Nigeria when Jumia partnered with the Dubai based OEM to sell the InnJoo smartphone.

The Infinix Zero is the first device from Infinix to run on the Android KitKat version. It is a 5 inch Android device with surprising specifications… when you take a close look and find out what price it sells. It comes in two variants, 8GB Internal Memory with 1GB RAM sells for N20,900 and another version bearing a 16GB internal memory with 2GB RAM sells for N23,900. A noticeable feature on the phone is the Metal body wrapped in a scratch resistant Gorilla glass casing covering the front and the back. Check out the unboxing here.

Design/Build

Holding the phone leaves you with no doubt that the phones got a very good build quality, the look and feel obviously surpass the 20k mark. The sleek cool looking phone has a metal body and covered both at the front and at the back by a glass screen. The Glass is a Gorilla glass so you are sure its protected from scratches. There are no obvious buttons on the screen of the phone, the Android Home, Menu and Back appear just below the display screen as small dots that lights up when tapped. Volume keys and the power button are located on the right.

There is a 13MP camera and LED flash sitting at the back of the phone. The battery is non-removable leaving the SIM port and memory card slot just beside the phone. The SIM and the memory card slot exist as a tray at the Left and Right hand side respectively and can only be pulled out by using a small Pin. No worries, there is a small pin in the pack which can be used. My only fear with this different SIM and SD card design is that it looks very fragile and the pin could easily get missing. The headphone jack and the USB/Charging port sits at the top of the phone while two speakers are at the bottom.

Display

The device has a 5 inch HD IPS display with a resolution of 720 x 1280 pixels and a 293ppi. Display is surprisingly sharp and bright, playing games and watching videos is great with astounding viewing angles. The Gorilla glass screen is sure to protect the screen from unwanted scratches.

Camera

There is a 13MP camera at the back of the phone and a 2MP at the front for taking selfies. Picture taken with the camera looks real without saturated colours but….not look so great, this goes to confirm the argument that a high Mega Pixel camera does not guarantee a good picture quality. Picture taken under low light are appear to be poor even on the phones display screen.

Camera features include auto capture when gesture such as waving hands across the screen is detected. Camera modes also include HDR, Face beauty, Motion tracking and Live photo.

Software and Performance

Infinix Zero runs on the latest Android 4.4.2 KitKat OS. Multitasking is easy and switching within apps runs very smoothly without hitch or interrupted closure, thanks to the 1.4GHz Octa Core processor. Games also runs smoothly, I have been playing the Asphalt 7 ever since I laid my hands on the phone. It is also worthy to note that there is a pre-installed Konga app and its not looking nor performing badly at all.

Memory

As stated earlier, there are two different variants with different RAM size and ROM. The 1GB RAM version comes with 8GB internal storage while the 2GB RAM version comes with 16GB internal storage. Memory can also be expanded up to 32GB with an SD card.  I have the 1GB RAM version and the performance is has not disappointed. Some people have been saying the 1GB RAM is small and could make the phone drag, well…. maybe but we shouldn’t forget that the KitKat is well optimised for at least a 512mb RAM.

Battery

There is a non-removable 1920 mAh Li-ion battery sitting inside the phone. Battery life is not as excellent as we thought. Charging the battery is surprisingly fast but also drains quickly even on an average daily use. It should be able to take you for a whole day if you use lightly and probably limit internet and social media usage. That’s what you get when you have a 1920 mAh battery powering an Octa Core processor device.

Final Verdict

Ok.. so after using the phone for some days, I can only advice would be buyers who use phones heavily to try get a power bank, then you got yourself on a jolly good ride.

I would say the Infinix Zero is a worthy device to spend your money on considering its unique design which I don’t think any phone in Nigeria has, build quality, price and the specifications. Trust me all of these would make up for the very little shortcomings. The future is really here.

  1. I like this phone but with this battery am sure by 12 noon I will be looking to have it tethered to the wall. I doubt if I want to bring back that Bold5 experience

  2. Forget whatever anyone had said about battery life on this phone, the battery on this phone is well optimised to suit most people. I consider myself a very heavy user, with the 3g on and lots of screen time. This beast of a phone is guaranteed to last till end of the day.

This phone is no doubt the best at this price point and 4+ price points.
Am definitely upgrading to the 16gb version as soon as possible, no doubt.
