A buzzword that is severally used in Nigeria’s ecommerce ecosystem is cash on delivery. But the world’s leading ecommerce company, Amazon, has found a way to receive cash payments in Africa before delivery.
To do this, it has teamed up with Western Union which is the continent’s most popular money transfer service.
Amazon has introduced a service called amazon PayCode that enables online shoppers to shop on Amazon and pay in cash at a West Union agent location.
The cross-border payment option has been launched in Kenya in Africa, along with nine other countries in Asia and Latin America. It is expected that the service will be launched in more countries if the initial rollout turns out to be successful.
Amazon PayCode is currently available in the following countries and regions: Chile, Colombia, Indonesia, Hong Kong, Kenya, Malaysia, Philippines, Peru, Taiwan, and Thailand.
“We are continuously working to launch additional countries, please check back frequently for updates,” Amazon said.
When a shopper visits a Western Union agent location to pay for an Amazon order, the agent will request for a code in addition to a photo ID.
“The ID you show to the agent must match the information you provided during checkout on Amazon. The agent will take your payment and then provide you with a receipt. You will also receive a payment confirmation email from Amazon, followed by a shipment notification when your order has shipped,” Amazon explained.
