Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg and wife Priscilla Chan announced last year on the arrival of their baby, a new initiative called CZI aimed at funding and advancing human potential and promoting equality in areas such as health, education, scientific research and energy. The initiative has now announced its first recipient with a $24 Million investment in Andela Inc, a startup that trains software developers in Nairobi and Lagos. Andela will use the funds for expansion into a third African country and double the number of software developers it trains while looking to already established partnerships with Google, Microsoft and other startups to grow its revenues.
Facebook is set to roll out a tool that will allow people to flag posts that they think could raise concern about self harm anonymously perhaps fromm their friends. If the team believes that a specified flagged post is a call for help, they will present the person with the list of options which includes options like “talk to a friend”, “contact a helpline” or “get tips and support.” And the award for best dad/app? Nigeria’s Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant-General Tukur Yusuf Buratai has said the Nigerian army is working with telecoms operators to rebuild facilities destroyed by insurgents in the north eastern part of Nigeria. He asked for collaboration with the communications ministry on the deployment of latest technologies to track criminals in the country. He expressed the readiness of the military to partner with the communications ministry on satellite communications.
