Android 16 Developer Preview Unveiled By Google

Google has introduced the first Developer Preview of Android 16, marking a significant milestone in its app development journey. Aimed at app developers, this release comes packed with experimental features and a few known bugs, offering insights into the upcoming Android iteration.

New Features Enhancing Privacy and Health Integration

Android 16 introduces key updates prioritizing user privacy and health data management. One notable feature is the embedded photo picker. This tool allows users to share specific images or videos with apps, limiting exposure to their entire media library. By enhancing data security, Google continues to put user privacy at the forefront.

Another remarkable addition is the integration of the Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources (FHIR) format into Google’s Health Connect platform. With this upgrade, apps can read and write medical records seamlessly. While still in early access, this feature highlights Google’s push for improved health data integration.

The release also expands on Google’s Privacy Sandbox, underscoring its commitment to user data protection across Android devices.

Android 16 Release Timeline

The rollout of Android 16 follows a detailed six-stage plan:

  1. November 2024: Initial Developer Preview.
  2. December 2024: Second Developer Preview.
  3. January 2025: Beta releases commence.
  4. March – April 2025: Platform Stability achieved.
