Apple Shows How To Update AirPods with Detailed Steps

Apple has updated its AirPods firmware support page with a more detailed guide for updating the AirPods, AirPods Pro, and AirPods Max. According to MacRumors, the guide outlines clear, step-by-step instructions to help users ensure their devices receive the latest firmware updates. Unlike other Apple devices like iPhones or Apple Watches, the AirPods firmware update process occurs automatically, requiring specific conditions to be met.

Expanded Guide for Firmware Updates

The updated support page still includes Apple’s original instructions but now features an expanded guide. This guide clarifies steps users can take to improve the chances of successful updates. Notably, the update process requires AirPods to be in their charging case and within Bluetooth range of a connected iPhone, iPad, or Mac.

Key Steps for AirPods and AirPods Pro Updates:

  1. Ensure your AirPods are within Bluetooth range of a Wi-Fi-connected device.
  2. Place your AirPods in their charging case and close the lid.
  3. Connect the case to a USB charger using a cable.
  4. Keep the lid closed and wait at least 30 minutes.
  5. Reconnect the AirPods by opening the case lid.
  6. Check the firmware version in the Bluetooth settings.

For AirPods Max, the steps are nearly identical, except the charging case requirement is omitted.

Tips for Successful Updates

The new guide emphasizes a few additional details. For example, Apple recommends waiting a minimum of 30 minutes after plugging in the charging case. If the firmware version does not update, users are advised to reset their AirPods and repeat the process.

To manually verify the firmware version:

  • Go to Bluetooth settings on your device.
  • Tap the Info button next to your AirPods.
  • Navigate to the About section.

If the firmware remains outdated, retry the steps or consult Apple’s support page for troubleshooting.

Why the Update Matters

Apple’s expanded guide aims to reduce confusion around the AirPods firmware update process. By offering clearer instructions, the company ensures users can easily access the latest features and bug fixes for their devices.
