Nigeria’s largest telecoms company MTN has described its latest app, My2015 BetterMe app, as the ultimate one-stop gateway to the Internet. The network’s Chief Marketing Officer, Adebayo Adekanmbi said this while interacting with journalists in Lagos.
He said: “We felt that you as a person, plus the internet, will deliver something, which is BetterMe. BetterMe is a simple equation, myself as an ordinary Nigerian plus the power of the Internet that is the leverage, the connection and the opportunity that comes with the Internet will make a person become a better me.”
He noted that the Internet is a game changer for an average Nigerian, though voice has done a lot.
“An average Nigerian teacher for example must have access to content like a teacher in America, with the only difference being their location. Since all the content needed for a teacher is already on the Internet, why not promote it and let people know about it? It is still a part of our quest to make information available to ordinary Nigerians,” he said.
He described the app as an aggregator platform.
He said: “Once you get the app, which is an aggregator platform, you can be sure that all the information anyone needs on sports, education, scholarship opportunities, which are all scattered everywhere, are all organised in one single place. We have been in this business for sufficient time to understand the needs of our 60 million customers.
“We have also carried out a great deal of consumer research on what Nigerians are looking for on the Internet and based on this we have curated and organised all that an average Nigerian needs from the Internet into the app. The 2015 BetterMe app will become our own local Wikipedia, such that everybody can go on it, populate and add content and it will become like your one-stop destination. It will be co-created and crowdsourced.”
