In a sad development, yet another big tech company is laying off staff. CEO of Google and Alphabet, Sundar Pichai announced layoffs in a letter titled, “A difficult decision to set us up for the future.”
Google and parent company Alphabet said they had made the difficult decision to reduce workforce by approximately 12,000 roles. These roles cut across Alphabet, product areas, functions, levels and regions across the globe. While affected Google staff in the US have received their letters, staff in other countries will take longer to arrive.
Citing the mass hiring post-Covid, the company said the realities of that era have changed insinuating that the roles that were useful then may not be useful anymore.
In its bid to help laid off staff transition easier and to field their questions, the company is set to host a town hall meeting next Monday.
