Glovo celebrates World Jollof Day

Glovo, the leading multi-category app, has revealed fascinating insights into the consumption habits of one of Nigeria’s favorite meals,Jollof Rice. The report which was released in recognition of World Jollof Day on August 22nd revealed that in the past year, Ikeja witnessed a 3,000% increase in jollof rice consumption, making it the biggest increase in the country compared to Lagos Mainland (25%).

Across Nigeria, Jollof rice is recognized for its rich flavors and encapsulates the spirit of togetherness and celebration. In the past year, Glovo insights revealed that 115 units of jollof rice were ordered per day in Nigeria, with a significant preference for lunchtime consumption, peaking at 1 pm. Notably, the period between 12 pm and 2 pm accumulates a third of the total daily consumption. Among the interesting statistics, one customer stood out by ordering a staggering 270 jollof rice meals within a year, spending a total of over 220,000 nairas on the meals. 

A remarkable finding is that although the consumption of Jollof rice in Ghana is +85% higher than in Nigeria, Nigerians order larger quantities of Jollof units in their orders. On average, Nigerians order 3 Jollof dishes per Glovo order, significantly surpassing other regions, such as Ghana, where the average is 1.5 Jollof dishes per order. This can be attributed to Nigerians’ cherished tradition of communal dining, bringing family and friends together over the tantalizing flavors of Jollof.

Lagos Island ranked first with 34% of total Jollof units delivered via Glovo in the past 12 months, followed by Abuja with 28% and Ikeja with 20%. Interestingly, 17:51 on 23 May 2023 marked a notable milestone, as Glovo experienced the golden minute when the most Jollof rice meals were being delivered simultaneously in Nigeria with 59 units; almost 1 order per second. 

Among the most popular jollof rice options in Nigeria, Chicken Republic, The Place, Sweet Sensation, Tastee Fried Chicken, Awoof Berekete, Mr Bigg’s, Opvine Restaurant, Matti Grills and PakPoint emerged as the top partners, delivering a significant number of jollof in the past twelve months.
