After the redesign of the Naira notes, the Central Bank of Nigeria governor, Godwin Emefiele has remained in the spotlight. The DSS has accused him of making funds available for terrorist groups in the country. This case was taken to court and thrown out due to the lack of evidence and not going through due process.
In a recent development however, a constitutional lawyer, Obed Agu, is taking the issue back to court. From his point of view, the officials of the Department of Security Services (DSS) need to be tried in court. This is a result of what the lawyer calls a “treasonable” and illegal offence.
There are concerns that this case, if not handled with caution, is capable of impacting Nigeria’s economy. Already, foreign entities are calling on international agencies to look into this allegation.
The National Coalition for Security and Antiterrorism (NACOFSA) claims that the CBN governor is seeking asylum in the United Kingdom. Also, the group goes on to say that CBN governor Godwin Emefiele has not offered any explanation for the allegations. But, some groups are fighting for the CBN governor’s vindication from the charges levelled against him.
Various other groups within the country have called on the president to address this issue before it escalates.
