Ex CEO of 54gene returns, launches another genomic startup

Abasi Ene-Obong, estranged co-founder and ex-CEO of genomic firm 54gene, has started a new company called Syndicate Bio, another genomic startup.

Ene-Obong made the announcement in a LinkedIn post. ;

“After a few months in stealth mode, I am happy to say that we have started Syndicate Bio to empower inclusive advancements in global genomics science.” 

According to him, Syndicate Bio will drive genomics and precision medicine initiatives across the world’s most diverse regions, starting from Africa.

Syndicate Bio had been in stealth since March 2023 before Ene-Obong ‘s official announcement.

“At Syndicate Bio, we use large-scale partnerships with governments, pharma companies, academia, and other stakeholders to drive local precision medicine impact.”

He also mentioned the creation of  “powerful datasets that can be used for drug discovery and development.” Ene-Obong was CEO of 54gene, a genomics startup he had co founded in 2019.

He resigned from the role last year amidst undisclosed reasons and damning allegations.

Confirming this, he said, “Nearly a year ago, I resigned from a company I founded and loved dearly. I chose not to fan the flames of speculation and quietly retreated to refocus on the bigger picture.”

His team at Syndicate Bio is a line up  of impressive resumes. It includes;

Jumi Popoola, as the chief scientific officer, Estelle Dogbo, as the chief operating officer.

Wubrest T. Bekele, Wissam Hamou, and Aminu Yakubu will join them as company leaders.

“In the coming months, we will be sharing some of the great strides made in furtherance of our vision and mission,” Ene-Obong teased.
