Optic fiber internet connectivity provide MainOne has signed an agreement with social media giant Facebook for the construction of an open access fiber optic urban infrastructure in Edo and Ogun states.
The deal was announced on February 25. In a statement, MainOne said the additional telecom infrastructure will reinforce the 750km of fiber optic already deployed by MainOne in both states and will help broaden broadband penetration in the regions.
Both parties agreed the metropolitan fiber optic network will provide broadband access to more than one million people in Benin City, Abeokuta, Sagamu and ten other cities in the two states.
The infrastructure will have connecting points of presence and will reach public places including schools and hospitals.
Ibrahima Ba, Head of Network Investments for Emerging Markets at Facebook, said the partnership is the demonstration of Facebook’s desire to “accelerate the deployment of broadband. In Nigeria, we are gathering lessons learned from scaling our global infrastructure and MainOne local environment knowledge to develop and test new work models that allow multiple operators to access a common infrastructure.”
