Meta has announced longer Facebook Reels for up to 90 minutes, months after it did the same for Instagram Reels.
Reels was brought to Facebook last year and until now, has always had a time limit of 60 minutes. Meta first launched Reels on Instagram in August 2020 in an effort to challenge TikTok on short-form video content.
The company soon found out though, that the desired result would even be more impactful when Reels was introduced to Facebook and allowed for cross-platform posting between Instagram and Facebook.
Meta says Reels is its fastest growing format as it keeps growing quickly.
According to Meta, Reels plays across Facebook and Instagram have more than doubled over the last year and reshares of Reels have more than doubled in the last six months on Facebook and Instagram.
In addition to the increased length, Facebook Reels also gets a new “Grooves” feature. This feature uses visual beat technology to automatically align and sync the motions of a video to the beat of a chosen song. This feature was launched on Instagram last year.
Besides Grooves, Facebook Reels also has a new template feature which helps users create Reels with trending templates, just like Instagram.
With this feature, a user can create a new Reel using the same template and as such have the same edits as one they just watched.
These features are not totally new on Meta though as they have all been launched on Instagram several months ago and only being introduced on Facebook.
More new features are to be expected as meta plans to continue to add features for Reels to make it easier for creators to be discovered.
