The Gulf Information Technology Exhibition (GITEX) wants to host about 100 Nigerian startups at GITEX Africa this year.
GITEX Africa will be happening at Bab Jdid, Marrakech, Morocco, from 29th to 30th May 2024.
Only seventy Nigerian startups participated in the event last year .
The organizer of GITEX Africa,Digital Development Agency, has however announced that it is increasing the number to 100 this year.
According to the agency, the increase is due to the role of Nigerian tech companies in the development of the African tech ecosystem
The 100 startups will be selected from accelerators and other stakeholders working with the Digital Development Agency.
The participating startups would have the opportunity to compete for a $100,000 prize money for the most compelling innovation.
Other prizes to compete for include the Young African CEO award which comes with a monetary prize.
The statement by the agency also revealed that this year’s edition will feature the launch of World Future Health Africa.
This is an initiative that seeks to bring more attention to the digital health space with the potential to provide affordable and accessible healthcare.
Perks of Participation
GITEX Africa offers startups the platform to present their innovations to a vast selection of investors from different countries including Nigeria.
Other privileges include;
- Startups get to learn from the experiences of global and local entrepreneurs and founders,
- Interaction with regulators on the continent.
- Getting matched with investors according to the relevant sector of operation
- startups meet with potential clients, including government agencies looking for specific innovative solutions tailored to the challenges their countries face.
Criteria for Selecting Startups for participation
The organizers often follow market trends and this largely influences the criteria for selection.
They look out for startups that are providing solutions in the markets investors are focusing on.
The market trend presently favors startups working with artificial intelligence, fintech, agrotech, and healthtech.
The organizers also prefer startups with products already in the market.
Founders who only have ideas to pitch, must ensure the ideas are tested and are market viable.
The founders also need to have some traction to pitch to investors.
