A formal contract signing ceremony has been held to herald the second submarine optic fiber project by telecoms giant Globacom called Glo-2.
Speaking on the latest project, Folu Aderibibge, Enterprise Segment Coordinator at Globalcom Limited, said Glo-2 is meant for the oil communities which it will provide with an ultra high connection capacity and improve the efficiency of the company’s network in several other areas.
According to Glo, Glo-2 entails three pairs of fibers which would provide solutions to the prolonged problem of non-availability of telecommunication service on offshore platforms.
Also speaking at the ceremony held at Eko Hotels in Lagos,Sanjib Roy, Globacom’s regional technical director, said the Glo-2 will be the first submarine cable in Nigeria to source in Lagos and land outside the capital. He sees this new investment as a new step taken by the company in providing quality data traffic.
“The Glo-2 will provide redundancy to the terrestrial fiber network, making network availability and reliability high across Nigeria. It will also provide additional capacity for high-speed data growth for economic and social empowerment of communities in oil-producing regions ,” said Roy.
The Glo-2 cable will strengthen the data capabilities already owned by Globacom through the Glo-1. This first high-speed telecoms infrastructure, deployed between Nigeria and the United Kingdom, with points of presence in Ghana, Mauritania, Senegal, Morocco, Portugal and Spain, was put into service in 2011.
