Google Pixel Fold review; to buy or not to buy?

In the camera department, the Pixel Fold has gotten tons of good reviews for its camera capabilities, featuring a triple-lens rear camera system.

Google recently officially opened pre-orders for its highly anticipated foldable smartphone, the Pixel Fold. With a host of impressive features and a sleek design, this cutting-edge device was positioned to make a splash in the competitive foldable phone market, competing with devices such as the Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Oppo Find N2.

When unfolded, the Pixel Fold features a 7.6-inch OLED display with a smooth 120Hz refresh rate that provides a vivid display and smooth scrolling. It also features an outer cover in the form of a 5.8-inch OLED display that allows users to conveniently check notifications and perform quick tasks without having to fully unfold the device.

Under the hood, the Pixel Fold is powered by Google’s Tensor G2 processor, the same powerful chipset found in the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro smartphones. Backed by 12 GB RAM, the Pixel Fold offers seamless multitasking capabilities and fast performance. Users can choose between two storage options: 256 GB or 512 GB, which provides ample space for apps, media, and files.

In the camera department, the Pixel Fold has gotten tons of good reviews for its camera capabilities, featuring a triple-lens rear camera system. The system consists of a 48MP main sensor, a 10.8MP ultrawide sensor, and a 10.8MP telephoto sensor, that provide stunning photo and video experiences. On the front, there is a 9.5 MP camera with an 84-degree field of view for high-quality selfies and video calls.

The battery on the other hand has failed to impress. The Pixel Fold offers a number of multitasking features that allow users to use two apps simultaneously or drag and drop content between apps effortlessly. While there are glowing remarks about seamless functionality on the Pixel fold, the 4821 mAh battery falls short and interrupts the smooth experience the Pixel is known for. The device also weighs heavy. Weighing 283g, the Pixel Fold is heavier than the Samsung Galaxy Fold 4 and the iPhone 14 Pro Max.

It runs on the latest Android 14 operating system, and while Google says the fold design will provide access to a variety of apps and features optimized for the foldable form factor, most apps do not make use of the screen real estate as promised.

Priced at $1,799, the Pixel Fold comes in two elegant colors: Obsidian and Porcelain. The Obsidian color presents a deep black tone, while the Porcelain color offers a sophisticated light beige shade. “When we started developing Porcelain, we wanted to bring in a new kind of neutral that felt warm and comforting, especially with all of the uncertainties in the world,” says Google’s Design Director Isabelle Olsson.

The Pixel Fold showcases its strengths in performance, design, camera capability, etc. In other aspects, not so much. Considering your specific needs, use cases, and personal preferences will help in making a decision.
