Google Rolls Out Gemini-Powered Smart Replies Update to Gmail

Google is rolling out a Gemini-powered update to Gmail for Android and iOS that enhances smart replies with more contextual and tailored responses. First announced in May, the new update enables Gmail’s smart replies to capture the intent of the entire email thread, offering more detailed and relevant suggestions.

Users can hover over suggested contextual smart replies to preview the text, selecting the best match for their needs or writing style. These replies can either be edited or sent directly. The goal is to save time for users, especially those dealing with a busy inbox, and to offer a wider range of automated responses beyond the usual “Yes, I’m working on it” or “No worries, thanks for the heads up!”

Enhanced Contextual Smart Replies

With the new update, Gmail now provides contextual smart replies that take into account the full content of the email thread. Suggested replies include initial greetings and signoff messages, providing a complete response without the need for typing.

This new feature is rolling out for Gemini Business, Enterprise, Education, Education Premium, and Google One AI Premium subscribers. Currently, it is only available in English and builds upon the original Smart Replies that were introduced in Gmail in 2017.
