Honor Phones (formerly owned by Huawei) recently announced a new flagship device, the Honor Magic4 Ultimate. This device brings a significant change to DxOMark camera ranking. The new Honor Magic 4 Ultimate launched under the umbrella of the Magic 4 lineup. Its former parent company Huawei has been sitting comfortably at the top of DxOMark camera rankings, with brands like Apple and Samsung far behind it, but all of that has changed.
Why Huawei sold Honor
Due to the relentless sanctions from the US government, Huawei had to let Honor operate independently to save the business. Huawei has also been a force to reckon with in the mobile camera department, with its 2 years old Mate 40 Pro still topping the more recent iPhone 13 Pro Max in-camera abilities. So, the fact that Honor now takes the top spot on the DxOMark ranking shows that the legacy Huawei laid is still alive.
Former camera king Huawei P50 Pro scored 144 points on DxOMark tests, while the Honor Magic4 Ultimate secured 146 points. Just 2 points above the P50 Pro, this score is enough to keep Honor on top of the chart until Huawei releases a new device.
Over the years, when Huawei launches a new smartphone, they set a new standard in the smartphone market. This time however, there are concerns on whether they will live up to that expectation. While we await a possible new high score on the DxOMark camera ranking, let us take a look at Honor Magic4 Ultimate specs.
What features does the Honor Magic 4 Ultimate pack?
The Honor Magic4 Ultimate is a flagship device, so we expect some “beastly” features. These features don’t come at a cheap price as the device retails for a whopping £1200! Currently, the Magic4 Ultimate is only available on Honor’s Chinese site and we are not sure it will make it to the global market.
- Screen: 6.81” LTPO OLED with support for 120Hz refresh rate.
- Operating System: Android 12 running Magic UI 6.
- Processor and Storage: Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, 12GB RAM, 512GB ROM.
- Main Camera: Quad camera setup with 50MP main camera, 64MP ultrawide, 64MP periscope telephoto camera and 50MP wide camera.
- Selfie Camera: Dual camera setup housing a 12MP selfie camera and a TOF sensor for biometric scan.
- Battery: 4600mAh, battery with 100W fast charging and 50W fast wireless charge.
Asides its amazing specs, there are a few other features that make this device stand out. The first is its Size, reaching a full thickness of 11.4mm is incredulous! Maybe this measurement is taken from the screen to the maximum reach of its camera bump. At 11.4mm the Honor Magic4 Ultimate is too bulky when compared to the likes of the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra which is 8.9mm thick.
Thankfully Honor made up for the thickness of the Magic4 Ultimate with a stunning top place camera setup. Will Honor keep its place at the top of DxOMark camera rankings as the best smartphone camera, or is this just temporary? We’ll have to watch as events in the smartphone camera department unfold.
