Apple’s recent announcements at WWDC 2023 showcased the company’s commitment to privacy and security alongside the introduction of new technologies. Apple unveiled the Vision Pro VR headset, MacBook Air 15, iOS17, and MacOS Sonoma, but their focus on safeguarding user data has remained a top priority.
To enhance privacy, the company has implemented various innovations. Updates to Safari Private Browsing offer improved security by shielding users from trackers and unauthorized access. Advanced tracking technology and fingerprinting protections prevent websites from employing the latest tracking techniques. Furthermore, Private Browsing now requires face ID or passcode verification to access, adding an extra layer of authentication and safeguarding user privacy.
Apple has also made privacy enhancements to photo permissions. The new photos picker feature allows users to selectively share specific photos with apps while keeping the rest of their library private. Additionally, when sharing links in Messages, Mail, and Safari Private Browsing, Apple automatically removes extra tracking information appended by websites.
Communication Safety, originally designed to protect children from receiving or sending explicit images in Messages, has been expanded to cover video content as well. The warning system now applies to AirDrop, FaceTime video messages, and the photos picker. The API for Communication Safety can also be integrated by developers, and all image and video processing occurs solely on the user’s device, ensuring content privacy.
For those concerned about spyware attacks, Apple introduced Lockdown Mode. This feature strengthens device defenses and limits certain functionalities, significantly reducing the attack surface on both iOS and watchOS.
Apple’s security-focused features don’t stop there. Check In is a new capability that allows users to automatically notify selected contacts when they arrive safely at a destination. The feature uses end-to-end encryption, ensuring that only the user and their chosen contacts can access location and device information.
Lastly, Live Voicemail provides protection against spam, scams, and invasive calls. Users receive live transcriptions of voicemail messages as the caller speaks, enabling them to decide whether to answer the call. This on-device feature utilizes Apple’s Neural Engine and doesn’t share information with Apple.
