Internet outages caused by damaged submarine cables restored – NCC

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has confirmed the restoration of voice and data services following the recent international undersea cable cuts which caused internet outage across West and South African countries.

Following damage to the submarine cables that provide internet access, Nigerians—including banks, media outlets, and telecom companies—were hit by internet disruptions on Thursday, last week.

The NCC had, through its Director of Public Affairs, issued a statement explaining that SAT3 and MainOne had downtime, and that cable companies, West African Cable System (WACS) and African Coast to Europe (ACE), had encountered problems in the West Coast route from Europe.

However, the commission has announced that internet services have now been restored to approximately 90% of their peak utilization capabilities in a statement signed by Reuben Muoka, Director, Public Affairs, and released on Monday.

As per his statement, “following the disruption on March 14, 2024, which affected data and voice services due to cuts in undersea fibre optics along the coasts of Cote d’Ivoire and Senegal, we are pleased to announce that services have now been restored to approximately 90% of their peak utilization capacities.”
