Even though the Nigerian Broadcasting Commission (NBC) has said Nigeria needs 18 more months to achieve digital migration, the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) has insisted that all its member nations must comply with the June 17 deadline for the transition from analogue to digital broadcasting.
In a statement, the ITU said in Nigeria and other countries under it must comply with the June 17 switch over as there would not be extension of deadline. Although last month, the Director General of the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) Mr Emeka Mba said Nigeria would not meet the ITU deadline on June 17.
The telecommunications union has not come out to state the sanction that would be waiting for Nigeria, but experts believe the country could be slammed with sanctions including suspension from the ITU.
