Google Gets Malware Live Threat Detection For Pixel And More

Google is enhancing its malware detection capabilities with the introduction of Live Threat Detection, a feature aimed at identifying hard-to-spot malware. The update, available on Android’s Google Play Protect service, continuously analyzes app behavior and alerts users in real-time if it detects suspicious activity.

First announced at Google I/O earlier this year, the feature is now rolling out to Pixel 6 and newer devices. Additional Android phones from manufacturers like Lenovo, OnePlus, Nothing, and Oppo are expected to receive the update in the coming months.

How Live Threat Detection Works

Unlike the normal malware detection that scans apps upon download, Live Threat Detection keeps monitoring installed apps. This approach helps identify malware that might initially remain dormant and activate malicious behaviors later. Importantly, the detection process operates on-device using Android’s Private Compute Core to ensure user data remains private.

When the system detects unusual app activity, it sends real-time alerts, enabling users to take immediate action. This proactive approach adds a significant layer of protection against increasingly sophisticated threats.

Additional Security Features

In addition to malware detection, Google is rolling out scam call detection, another feature announced at I/O. This tool uses on-device AI to analyze calls for signs of scam attempts, such as suspicious conversational patterns or fraudulent requests. If detected, users receive alerts encouraging them to end the call.

Currently, the scam call detection feature is exclusive to beta testers of the Phone by Google app with Pixel 6 or newer devices. A wider rollout to other Android phones is planned for the future.

Google’s continuous updates highlight its commitment to improving security in an ever-evolving digital landscape. With Live Threat Detection and scam call detection, Android users gain robust tools to safeguard their data and avoid scams.

These advancements underscore Google’s role in setting the standard for mobile security, making Android devices more resilient to cyber threats.
