Meta Hypernova Smart Glasses: Premium AR Wearable with Built-In Display

Meta is reportedly working on a premium version of its Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses that will feature a built-in screen for displaying apps and photos. According to a report from Bloomberg, the new glasses codenamed Hypernova could launch by the end of the year and will offer advanced features like gesture controls and an improved camera.

Hypernova: What to Expect

  • Built-in Display: The screen will be visible only on the right lens in the lower-right quadrant, best viewed when looking downward.
  • App & Photo Display: Users will be able to run apps and view images, similar to a Meta Quest home screen.
  • Gesture & Touch Controls: Navigation will be done via hand gestures and capacitive touch on the frame’s sides.
  • AI Chatbot Integration: Meta plans to enhance the AI-powered assistant already found in its current smart glasses.
  • Improved Camera: A significant upgrade over the existing Ray-Ban Meta model.

Pricing & Comparison

  • Hypernova is expected to cost between $1,300 and $1,400 much higher than the $299 starting price of the current Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses.
  • The higher price is likely due to its included “neural” wristband controller, codenamed Ceres, which is also being developed for Meta’s Orion AR glasses.
  • Unlike fully-fledged AR glasses, Hypernova is considered a mid-tier offering, similar to devices like the Rokid Glasses that display basic green text overlays.

What’s Next?

Meta is already working on a next-generation version, Hypernova 2, which will feature two screens and is planned for release in 2027. Meanwhile, Meta’s Orion AR glasses which are expected to include more advanced augmented reality features are still in development.
