MTN now has 15 million subscribers in Ghana

Major telecoms company MTN has announced it now has 15 million subscribers in Ghana. To herald this feat, the network has rolled up plans to celebrate its 15 millionth subscriber.

The network ended 2006 with 2.5 million; at the end of 2007 its subscribers grew to 4 million, 8 million by December 2009, 10 million in 2011 and 12 million in March 2013. Between 2014 and September 2015, the network’s subscriber base rose to 15 million as announced by the network’s Chief Executive Officer Ebenezer Twum Asante.

Speaking at the launch of the network’s 15,000,000th Customer celebrations in Accra, Asante said the growth in MTN subscriber base was the result of a deliberate strategy coupled with substantial and sustained investment in network infrastructure.

According to him, MTN had made a total investment of US$2.5 billion, since 2006, in the expansion and modernization of its network.

He revealed that the network was the first to bring GSM technology to Ghana; it also piloted Blackberry Service in 2008, introduced 3G commercial service in 2009, launched mobile money in 2009, introduced of blade cluster technology, launched a foundation for Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), built an ultra-modern switching and data centre, and sponsored World Cup 2010.

“In 2014, MTN was honoured as the Best Tax Payer in Ghana while its sustained Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) investments of more than GHC 21 million in 102 major projects across the country, since 2007, had impacted on over three million people directly and indirectly,” he said.
