MWC 2022: OPPO announces 240Watt SUPERVOOC flash charging

OPPO has announced a new improvement in its SUPERVOOC flash charging technology at the MWC 2022 held in Barcelona, Spain.

Fast charging phones have become a mainstay and a marketing nerve point for most smartphones as a result of the fast paced life this generation leads, as well as the power situation in some countries.

August 2020 saw the launch of the Xiaomi Mi 10 Ultra. While the device came with amazing specs, its charging speed was most impressive. At 120W, the Mi 10 Ultra could charge from 0-100% in just 23 mins. Xiaomi may not have sealed the race for higher charging speeds, but they set the bar pretty high for others to reach.

Almost a year later, in June 2021, Infinix announced their ultra-fast charge concept device. A device designed with the ability to fully charge a 4000mAh battery in just 10 mins. Infinix aimed to raise the fast charge bar by 40W from what Xiaomi achieved, albeit, concept wise because the Infinix device never went into sale. The device was only a way of showcasing “what could be.” However, OPPO’s announcement at the MWC 2022 on the 28th of February may be the real game changer!

OPPO SUPERVOOC flash charge with Battery Health Engine

OPPO announced two very ridiculously high charging speeds at the MWC 2022 with the first clocking at 150W! This new charging speed from OPPO SUPERVOOC flash charging came with additional features aimed at conserving battery life.

“Battery Health Engine” is a technology integrated into OPPO’s 150W SUPERVOOC flash charging. It does this to help curb battery degradation over a series of charging cycles throughout the battery’s lifetime. This means that after 1600 charging cycles at 150W, the battery still maintains 80% of its original capacity, hence prolonging the battery’s lifespan. At this charging speed (150W) a 4500mAh battery will fully charge in just 15mins.

A New Fast Charging Record Set By OPPO SUPERVOOC

OPPO has gone ahead to break the 150W fast charging record by setting a new 240W SUPERVOOC fast charge at the MWC 2022 event. This charge ability 24V/10A technology uses a Type-C port to deliver power.

Concerns and Solutions

At 240W flash charging, we have a few concerns. What if the charger overheats? What if the watt power supplied damages the phone’s battery?

OPPO looks like they have taken some of our concerns into consideration; the Safety of the adapter (charging brick), cable, phone and ultimately the user. The company announced that the 240W SUPERVOOC comes with an integrated chip that helps monitor and control the voltage, current, and temperature delivered during charge.

Further, the device that will use this newest charging speed will come with an in-built temperature sensor to help reduce the chances of overheating to the barest minimum. Safe to say it is a new era of “safe flash charging” with OPPO SUPERVOOC.
