CES 2016 was four days of announcements and ‘unveilings’ of some great and some not-so-great tech products. Now that it’s come to an end, here’s my list of top 10 products in no particular order.
- The Samsung Family Hub Refrigerator:
This is an ambitious and pricey refrigerator (will be sold for about $5,000), but I love all that it can do. It comes with a 21.5-inch Gorilla Glass touchscreen panel on the upper right door, which automatically brightens up whenever its sensors detect someone coming close. It also comes with 3 hidden cameras that take pictures of the contents of the fridge which you can access remotely via your phone or tablet.
- The Chevy bolt:
Touted as the “the electric car for the masses”, the Chevy Bolt made it to my list because it’s the first affordable electric vehicle (will cost about $30,000) that runs for a good range (200 miles) on a fully charged battery.
- The Typhoon H Drone
This was one of the best drones showcased at CES 2016. It comes with Intel’s RealSense technology which helps it to avoid collisions. The 4K camera can shoot pictures resolution and record video footage in 12 mp. The Typhoon H also comes with some innovative new safety features like a fail safe system which allows it remain stable and land if a motor should fail and an ultrasonic proximity detection which assists it in avoiding large obstacles
- The Identilock:
This isn’t a product though, but a technology which may help in reducing incidences of gun violence not just in the U.S but in other parts of the world. It’s essentially a biometric gun lock that requires a user to touch a fingerprint reader before he or she can access the trigger.
- Lenovo’s IdeaPad 610 S :
The Lenovo Ideacentre 610S is a small PC that provides an easier way to share videos or photos as it comes with a detachable projector. The projector sits right on top of the desktop PC’s triangular chassis or can be placed nearby for the perfect distance from your black wall or projector screen. it was one of the most compact devices of its kind unveiled at the show.
You can use the projector and CPU separately and simultaneously.
- The HP EliteBook Folio:
I love this laptop. Being only 12.4mmm thin and weighing less than 1Kg this device is pitched as the world’s thinnest and lightest business class notebook. It even offers a battery life up to 10 hours and a 4K display on board.
- Misfit Ray Fitness and Sleep Monitor:
This was definitely one of the sleekest looking and truly functional wearables unveiled at CES 2016. It has a minimalist design and can be worn as a necklace or bracelet and can even be attached to your shoelaces. It also has a battery life of 6-months which is very impressive for an activity tracker.
- Hyundai’s Virtual Car Owner’s Manual:
This is an awesome augmented reality owner’s manual that Hyundai will be building into its Car Care app this year. If you own a Hyundai car all you’ll need to do is download the app to your smartphone and then point it to any part of your car you’d like to learn about. Labels will pop up on your phone’s screen — overlaying the live image of your car — to show what you’re looking at. Then, once you tap on any of those label, you’ll get a description or how-to video or even tutorials for basic maintenance.
Available: First quarter of 2016 (for select models)
- Alienware 13 with OLED screen:
Alienware ever so mindful of the needs and fantasies of gamers unveiled an Alienware 13 with OLED screen. This OLED screen as expected gives off brighter colors and has the added advantage of refreshing really quickly thereby reducing visual stutter in games
- ONAGOfly:
Of the over 25 drones showcased at the event, the onagofly makes it to my list because of its appeal to the drone newbies
The onagofly doesn’t rely on a separate controller but instead can be controlled in real-time via an Android or iOS app. The app communicates with the drone through Wi-Fi so that the user can control the it from a distance of up to 20 meters. Another interesting feature is its GPS Module which allows it follow the user as well as help it return to its base position.
If you are a runner, a D.I.Y Youtuber, cycler or tour guide all you need to do is turn on the follow me feature and pre-set the desired height from which it should capture your videos.
