Facebook recently releases a smaller and lighter version of its app called Facebook Lite. This app is an optimized version for low-end Android devices, not only is the app optimized for entry level Android devices, it also works well with 2G connections and in areas with low internet connection.
The app is just about 262KB in size much lower than the 25MB Facebook Android app and its interphase looking like a web page version. While the experience and design is very basic, you still get the usual and key experience like notification, posting status updates, sharing, likes, pages, and messages etc you get in the main Facebook app.
I have used this app for two days and I can say the app has been responsive and experience has been impressive. The app size is small and it consumes far much less data compared to the main Facebook so I immediately deleted my Facebook app which was taking up about 150MB of space on my phone. The app loads faster loads quickly even under the terrible network our operators provide us.
One advantage this app has from my experience is that you can send and receive messages from within the app as compared to the main facebook app which does not allow that. Now there is no need to download facebook messenger app. A downside is also notices is that you cannot save images directly unto the phone.
Facebook says the app is available in Bangladesh, Nepal, Nigeria, South Africa, Sudan, Sri Lanka, Vietnam, and Zimbabwe. These are countries where internet connection and penetration is still low.
Now speaking for Nigeria, the app is yet to be available when you do a search on the Google play store from your Android phone. A search from a PC displays the app but it’s description says it’s still not compatible with my devices. See images below
Anyway not to worry you can sideload the app by downloading the APK file here via APK Mirror
Have you used the app or you just did after reading this piece, kindly share your experience in the comment section below.
