Nigeria to unveil master plan for telecoms industry

A new master plan for Nigeria’s telecoms industry will soon be unveiled by the Nigerian government. Minister of Communications, Barrister Adebayo Shittu, revealed this while speaking in Ibadan southwest Nigeria. According to him, the master plan would be ready within the next four weeks.

The minister said one of the objectives of the telecoms master plan is to make the sector a major source of revenue generation for Nigeria. The minister noted that Nigeria presently relies solely on revenues generated from oil but it could be replaced by the telecoms sector.

“The telecommunication sector is a better alternative to oil in terms of revenue generation,” Shittu said.

He also expressed the commitment of the present administration in Nigeria towards ensuring the enactment of the best operating laws that would be guiding the industry and its stakeholders.

“If the telecommunication sector is fully explored, it could provide many job opportunities. Our responsibility is to ensure that we have the best operating laws for the telecommunication industry. Within the next three to four weeks, we will come up with the master plan for the telecommunication sector”, he said.

The minister also promised Nigerians that he would continue to ensure that citizens enjoy the best of telecommunication services.

“I did not offer money to anybody to secure the ministerial appointment, so I won’t steal government money and nobody needs to pay any money to see me,” he said.
