OpenAI has launched a new feature called “Canvas” for ChatGPT projects. The interface adds a workspace beside the regular chat window, allowing users to write and code. Canvas is available in beta to ChatGPT Plus and Teams users, with Enterprise and Edu users getting access this week.
Several AI providers are adopting editable workspaces like Canvas. OpenAI’s Canvas is similar to Anthropic’s Artifacts and Cursor. It aims to match competitor offerings and expand ChatGPT’s capabilities. This new interface provides users with a smoother way to edit writing or code, enhancing productivity.
Canvas also allows users to fix parts of AI-generated output without redoing entire prompts. For example, you can edit sections of code or writing directly. This is useful for longer outputs or complex projects that require continuous refinement.
OpenAI Product Manager Daniel Levine said, “This is a more natural way to collaborate with ChatGPT.” In a demo, Levine showcased how to write an email in Canvas and adjust it. Users can modify the length, tone, or even rewrite sections in another language.
For coding, Canvas introduces a new “review code” button, which suggests specific edits. ChatGPT can also add comments to explain code sections and fix bugs if needed.
Once the beta phase is over, OpenAI plans to roll out Canvas to free users as well. This new feature strengthens ChatGPT’s position in the AI space, offering users more control over their projects.
The coding canvas comes with unique features. Levine demonstrated ChatGPT creating an API web server in Python, which appeared in the canvas window. By clicking the “add comments” button, ChatGPT adds clear documentation to the code.
Users can highlight sections of code to ask for explanations or clarification. Additionally, a new “review code” button will suggest edits for both AI-generated and user-written code. Users can approve, edit, or decline these changes. If approved, ChatGPT attempts to fix the bugs automatically.
Once canvas is out of beta, OpenAI says it plans to offer the feature to free users as well.
