Samsung’s display-making affiliate, Samsung Display, has announced that it’s going to unveil the world’s first “stretchable” display at the Society for Information Display 2017 in Los Angeles this week.
The Society for Information Display 2017 event is set to take place from tomorrow, 22nd of May, to the 24th of May. According to The Korea Herald, Samsung will showcase 9.1-inch variants of stretchable OLED (organic light-emitting diode) panels at the conference.
What makes this particular stretchable display different from the previously showcased flexible display, is that the previous ones could be bent or folded only in one direction, while this particular one bends both ways. The display which would be used on foldable phones, wearables, and in cars, would be able to bend up to 12 mm either way, and can be curved, bended or rolled, without losing a high degree of resolution.
Although Samsung will be showcasing the panel at the event, report has it that the technology is still in early stages of research and development. There is presently no information on when the stretchable OLED displays will make their way to smartphones or other hand-held devices.
