Details on the security features on the new naira notes have been revealed by the CBN to help keep Nigerians informed. The new notes became official in the month of November and will phase out the current notes in a matter of weeks. But, some rumours claim that bad actors have begun producing counterfeit copies of the new Naira notes.
To battle these counterfeit notes, the CBN has revealed security details baked into the new notes which will help the new 200, 500, and 1000 notes stand out from impostors.
First is the 1000 Naira note. It comes with an intaglio raised print, a kinegram, and an optically variable ink. The said ink used for the upside-down triangle changes from blue to green when under or hit by light.
For the new 500 Naira note, it comes with hand-engraved portraits and a CBN windowed metallic security thread. The 200 Naira note comes with the same features as the other notes but lacks the gold patch or kinegram. All notes have the portrait watermark and raised integral prints.
At the moment, the new Naira notes are not readily available for use in certain parts of the country. There are also rumours that counterfeit new notes are in the development stage. Knowledge of the new Naira notes security features will help Nigerians spot any counterfeit they spot.
