July might have come and gone, but the dust left in its wake still permeates the air. Here are the top stories that got Nigerians “Googling” in July.
As will be expected, “Ebola” was the number 1 trending term in Nigeria. Following the death of Patrick Sawyer and the female nurse in Lagos, Nigerians have been spending time to search for everything “Ebola”. The heightened fear of Ebola and other related health issues also probably resulted in the surge of interests in the term “doctors’ strike” which was 4th on the list of most trending search in Nigeria.
Coming Second on the list is the much talked about Hamas – Israeli conflict. This international issue which has so far resulted in the deaths of innocent people from both sides got Nigerians curious and running online. Nigerians were curious to understand what was going on and how it would likely impact other regions of the world.
Speaking about deaths, the deaths of popular human rights lawyer and activist Bamidele Aturu who passed away in July and the burial of late gospel artist Kefee also got Nigerians ‘Googling”. Bamidele Aturu nicknamed “Gentle Tiger” for his courage and calm demeanor shot into national limelight in 1988 when as a corper refused to shake hands with the then Military Governor of Niger State, Colonel Lawan Gwadabe during his NYSC passing out parade! He had cited the military as having caused great harm to the democratic aspirations of Nigerians as the reason for his action.
Even in death, Kefee continues to warm Nigerian hearts. As expected, her burial attracted so much interest online, as Nigerians were searching for pictures, videos of the burial ceremony. RIP Kefee, you will surely be missed!
The issues surrounding Malala Yousafzai’s trip to Nigeria and the sudden change of mind of the president to meet with the parents of the Chibok girls made it the 6th top trending search. Nigerians were searching for everything; pictures, stories and videos.
On the fun side, the celebrity wedding of Jude and Ifeoma Okoye didn’t disappoint. Nigerian were searching for everything on the wedding; pictures, gists, who was there, what happened, and particularly why Peter missed it etc.
And ain’t we always happy whenever a beautiful lady makes the news? Well the 27th edition of the MBGN competition which held on the 18th in Bayelsa ended on a high note when Miss Akwa Ibom Iheoma Nnadi was announced as the 2014 winner. Truth be told, she is fine and as evidence by this list, many Nigerians seem to like having her represent the country.
Perhaps the most surprising entry on the list is the name “John G Lake”. Who is John G Lake? he is a Canadian–American leader in the Pentecostal movement that began in the early 20th century, and is known as a faith healer. How did he suddenly become popular? According to punchng.com his name came up when popular pentecostal Pastor Itua Ighodalo spoke about ebola.
The list of top trending musicians would have looked normal with top headliners like Olamide, Davido, and Wizkid. Except this time, the inclusion of the “Shoki” originator Lil Kesh in 2nd place gave it a somewhat fresh look. Lil Kesh who premiered the video of the hit track Shoki remix featuring Davido and Olamide seems to have captured Nigerian dance floors at the moment.
And finally, did Burna Boy really fire his Mum as his manager? Well, if that doesn’t get attention in Nigeria, then nothing will.
The top questions from Nigerians are still related to the Top trending terms too.
