In 2019, sci-fi movies, meaning those that explicitly make our wildest fantasies come true and paint hackers as the world’s saviours, were a massive source of discussion. In the past, we’ve mulled over whether science fictions in movie will ever be a reality. In 2017, we also talked our way through interesting geek movies that possessed elements of future and timelessness. It’s 2020 and we look forward to no less discourse. The trailers already have us thinking, questioning, and, of course, eager to watch.
Here’s TechCityNG’s list of the most anticipated sci-fi movies of 2020.
1. THE INVISIBLE MAN
The Invisible Man is an American-Australian science fiction horror film that returns as a reboot to theaters in 2020. The movie, which was written and directed by Leigh Whannell, will arrive in theaters on February 28. The Invisible Man tells the story of a woman trapped in an abusive relationship with genius scientist, who manages to escape his grip and goes into hiding. The scientist subsequently looks to have committed suicide, and leaves the woman a portion of his wealth. It becomes apparent to the woman that her ex-boyfriend’s death might not be as simple as it seems. She then faces the challenge of trying to convince the people in her life that she’s in danger from an invisible person.
2. BLOODSHOT
Bloodshot, which will arrive in theaters worldwide on March 13th, 2020, is an elevated sci-fi/action film based on the blockbuster series of comic books. The comic book, which was created by Kevin VanHook, Don Perlin, and Bob Layton in 1992, has sold more than 7 million copies since its release. Clearly, there’s an audience for the movie adaptation. Vin Diesel, star of the Fast and Furious movies, will take on the lead role of the long-awaited Bloodshot.
3. FREE GUY
Free Guy, an upcoming 2020 American science fiction action comedy film, comes to theaters on July 3, 2020. There isn’t much to know about the movie yet, except that its promo focuses on the fun and absurdity of open world games. With weapons and adventures as constant features, Free Guy promises plenty fun.
4. TENET
Tenet, the new action blockbuster by writer-director Christopher Nolan, is set to hit theaters on July 17, 2020. The movie, which was shot using a combination of 70MM and IMAX cameras, features John David Washington as the lead character. The movie also stars Dimple Kapadia, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Clémence Poésy, Michael Caine, and Kenneth Branagh.
5. THE TOMORROW WAR
The Tomorrow War is scheduled to hit theaters on December 25, 2020. Although, the specifics of The Tomorrow War plot remain a mystery, we do have an idea of what to expect. The movie tells the story of a man drafted into a war against invading aliens. This man then brings a unique skillset onboard involving the past. The movie focuses in the future where the human race is fighting a war and losing to an alien invasion. To retaliate, scientists then develop a way to draft soldiers from the past to fight the war. According to IMDb, the movie is about “A man is drafted to fight in a future war where the fate of humanity relies on his ability to confront his past.”
