Government sets high expectations for Ghana’s new Tema ICT Park

The government of Ghana has set high expectations for the ongoing Tema ICT Park Project.

The Deputy Minister for Communications, Ato Sarpong, has indicated that the Tema Information Communication Technology (ICT) Park, when completed, would attract revenue for Ghana’s economic development.

Mr Sarpong said the main objective for the facility was not only to bring in revenue but to also enable the private sector to flourish, create jobs for Ghanaians and bridge the unemployment gap in Ghana.

He was addressing a joint news conference organized by the Ministry and a seven-member delegation from Mauritius in Accra, yesterday, on the progress level of the ICT Park.

The Deputy Communications Minister said the current one-storey existing facility on the park was expected to generate 500 jobs with an estimated investment portfolio of two hundred and sixty million US Dollars (US$ 260, 000,000.00).

In her remarks, Mrs Mawuena Trebah, Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Ghana Investment Promotion Center (GIPC), said GIPC aimed to promote investment that was focused on the strategic projects of the various Ministries.

Mrs Treba said GIPC was poised to leverage and bring on board the world’s best investors– Ghana having been named by International Business Machines (IBM) as the number one ICT Center in the sub Region and the only African country with six mobile phone operators.

She said GIPC was excited about getting Mauritius investors to invest in the sugar and textile industries of Ghana.

For his part, the Chairman of the Mauritius delegation, Gerard Sanspeur, said Mauritius was disposed to investing in the ICT Park because it would create an opportunity for young entrepreneurs as the project would have all the ICT facilities they would need to work with.

Mr Sanspeur said, with Ghana providing the land and facilities, Mauritius would provide the funds as well as quality expertise to come out with a world class ICT Center to promote Ghana as well as attract foreign investors.
