Style and elegance are two attributes that are usually associated with the French, they can be seen in their architecture, cuisine, fashion, and going by what they are doing with the Wiko brand, it’s becoming obvious that the French also make stylish and elegant phones.
Earlier this year the Wiko Getaway was introduced to Nigerian consumers and with It Wiko offered smartphone users an affordable device with a premium feel. Since then they’ve been hard at work creating something more impressive. It’s called the Wiko Ridge 4G.
We got our hands on the Ridge and here’s what we discovered.
Design wise it’s quite pretty; the version we have is in the black gray colour with aluminum threads at the side. The back cover is made of plastic but it has a sand-stone finish which feels a bit like suede. The Wiko Ridge feels very light, the literature states that it’s just 125g; and with dimensions of 5.63” by 2.83” and a thickness of 0.3” It’s the ideal definition of handy.
The display on the Ridge is a 5” IPS LCD capacitive touch screen with a resolution of 1280px by 720px and a pixel density of 294ppi. Images viewed on the display are sharp and the colours come out well. The Wiko Ridge display is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 3.0 and has multi-touch sensitivity of up to 10 fingers.
Inside, the Wiko Ridge is powered by a Qualcomm MSM8916 Snapdragon 410 chipset, a Quad-core 1.2 GHz Cortex-A53 CPU and an Adreno 306 GPU. It comes with 16GB of internal storage, 2GB RAM and using the micro-SD slot the memory can be expanded to 64GB.
Just like on the Wiko Getaway, the battery on the Wiko Ridge is irremovable but unlike the former, the Ridge does not use a side sim tray instead it has dual sim slots which are under the removable back cover. One of the sim slots holds either a nano sim or a micro sd card and the other holds a micro sim. Battery power on the Wiko Ridge gives between 14 to 17 hrs talk time depending on whether the network is 2G or 3G and with average usage (browsing, phone calls, and occasional game play e.t.c) the 2400mAH battery lasts for about a day.
The operating system that the Ridge runs on is the Android KitKat 4.4.4, and like the physical weight, its light when it comes to pre-installed software so it runs fast and smooth. In fact it comes with just the stock android OS, there’s no unnecessary bloat-ware included with the Wiko Ridge.
With its Sony lens and Philips flash, the 13-megapixel main camera guarantees great shots, in different conditions and for Selfies the 5-megapixel front facing camera is adequate. Camera features of the Ridge include Geo-tagging, face detection, HDR and it shoots videos of 1080p resolution at 30 frames per second.
Included in the box are the charger and headphones. We really like the headphones because they aren’t your regular thin wired headphones that easily get tangled. Instead Wiko opted for flattened wires that make the headphones more sturdy and tangle free.
