Threads announces new features as user activity drops 50%

Threads may be experiencing a decline in activity and engagement, weeks after launch.

Threads which is Meta’s rival for Twitter had a successful launch, and made history by reaching 100 million users just days after its launch. 

Recent reports however show that the app’s numbers have reduced drastically in the last one week. According to reports, the number of daily active users on Threads has dropped from 49 million to 23.6 million in a week. 

This shows that almost 50% of users who excitedly signed up are not coming back to use the app.

Data had initially revealed that the time spent on the app by users has plunged by 50%, from 20 minutes to 10 minutes.

Pulling it’s study data mostly from Android usage (with claims that it is easier to track than iOS), Similar Web, the data tracking site which conducted the study, mentioned in their report that Threads may not have given reasons compelling enough for people to switch from their preferences and stay on Threads. 

“Threads is missing many basic features and still needs to offer a compelling reason to switch from Twitter or start a new social media habit with Threads,” Similar Web wrote.

Some studies have attributed the decline to the app’s limitations, such as the lack of breaking news content (like Twitter), and users’ inability to operate anonymously (like Instagram and Twitter).

Meanwhile, Threads has rolled out its first feature update on iOS.

The feature update which users have eagerly expected since the launch, was announced on Tuesday by Cameron Roth, a software engineer for Instagram. Roth shared a post on Threads announcing, “New @threadsapp iOS updated dropped today! Check out what we’ve been hard at work cooking up.”
