Top Searches on Google: Neymar, Burundi, Bob make the list

Looks like the sporting season is making some players who dare to make a mark on the pitch very relevant on the google world map. The week before the last, Messi was on the google top sarch list and this week, we have Neymar. Other events and personalities also made the list this week. Keep reading to see who made the list last week and why.

Inge Lehmann

Inge Lehmann was the woman who made the very convincing discovery that our planet’s centre was basically solid surrounded by Molten matter. This was after she studied the Seismic data she collated from the 1929 New Zealand earthquake.

Born in May 13, 1888, Inge who is Danish by origin, had access to math and Science education- courses that were rare for women to study. We guess this must have propelled her to focus so much on her studies that she beat her male colleagues to a discovery that has helped in shaping the future of Seismology and Geophysics. (May 13, 1888 – Feb 21, 1993)

Though Inge died on Feb 21, 1933, her contributions are still being acknowledged as Google celebrated a teacher of men on the 127th anniversary of her birth and so did thousands of Nigerian Google searchers.

No, Neymar, no!

There’s nothing like a talent in full flower and Neymar da Silva Santos Junior is blossoming like springtime on football pitches everywhere he goes. While everyone may be having fits of ecstasy over the Barcelona and Brazil ace’s on field exploits, there are those wagging the finger of disapproval – not at Neymar but Barcelona’s club President, Josep Bartomeu and his predecessor Alexandre “Sandro” Rosell.

Spain’s National Court has accepted the State prosecutor’s request to open a trial against Barcelona and its current and ex presidents for allegedly evading tax linked to the player’s signing – they had “claimed” to have paid 57.1 million euros for his services. Prosecutors say it was “at least” 83.371. This development is definitely not healthy for the image of Spanish football especially against the backdrop of the threatened football strike.

The Business of Bob

Thirty-four years after his death, Bob Marley is alive and more financially well-off than most people living today. According to Forbes magazine, the Reggae Music icon earned $20 million in 2014 placing him fifth on its Top Earning Dead Celebrity List for the year.

With a shrewd combination of merchandising and timely re-releasing of his vibrant, socially conscious and ever-relevant music, the Estate of Robert Nestor Marley (Feb 6, 1945 – May 11, 1981) know they have a good thing going and could teach current hotshots a thing or two about making their wealth reproduce.

“Basically our approach to branding”, says daughter Cedella, “is to take the Marley image and just be ourselves as business people, so we can let daddy be the musician”. Somewhere, hopefully, daddy Bobby must be feeling irie.

Burundi Burning

It started with the burning ambition of President Pierre Nkurunziza who recently sought a third term. The fire of his ambition literally spread to the streets as aggrieved citizens gave an immediate and incendiary response. Then came the “coup”, the “counter-coup” and then the sound of gunfire filled the air. In the face of all this, people wondered where the president had been all this while but word has it that he remains in Tanzania waiting for the coast to clear. It probably became worthy of interest to Nigerian Google searchers as they searched: what is it about African Heads-of-States and their tendency to outstay their welcome?

Bale out!

Juventus beat Real Madrid to this year’s UEFA Champions League Final but what went wrong? Gareth Bale is the answer many an incensed madridista (fan, player or official) would readily offer. But that would be too easy, wouldn’t it.

Yes, the ever-present weight of his record sign-on fee (91 million euros) and a less-than-stellar season have conspired to make the Welshman the poster boy for everything amiss with the Spanish giants and speculations are rife that he’ll soon be shown the door marked “EXIT”.

Obviously, Real seems to have forgotten it takes more than one player to produce a poor season. Still, home is where you go when you’re whipped, Gareth-laddie! And the thousands of Googling Nigerian fans in support say…

While some are reading, some are also viewing and from the records on YouTube, Nigerians are searching for…
