Twitter to Scrap Fleets Barely A Year After Launch

Tweeps will no longer be able to use Fleets from August 3rd as Twitter has announced that it will be taking off the feature due to low performance.

Barely a year after launching the 24-hours story feature, Twitter openly declares it as a failed experiment. In a recent blog post, Ilya Brown, Twitter’s vice president of product, said, “We built Fleets as a lower-pressure, ephemeral way for people to share their fleeting thoughts but … we haven’t seen an increase in the number of new people joining the conversation with Fleets as we hoped.”

Before launching Fleets, Twitter had high expectations that the feature will motivate infrequent users of Twitter to engage the app more but it’s been slacking.

However, as part of the changes to come, the Tweet composer will be upgraded to include features from the Fleet composer like the full-screen camera, text formatting options, and GIF stickers. Also, Space will be retained to feature activities happening on the platform, Tweeps will be able to see when someone they follow is having a conversation on Space.

Brazil was the first country Twitter launched Fleets in March 2020, before officially launching in November. Although Twitter didn’t get the best result from the feature, the likes of Snapchat who was the first to launch the 24-hour story feature has so far laid no complaints about it. Likewise, platforms like Facebook, Instagram, YouTube and LinkedIn.
