Nigeria’s commercial capital city of Lagos is one of the rapidly growing cities in world. Although it is one of the small cities in terms of landmass, more people are moving to the city, and putting much pressure on the city’s infrastructure including transport service. This is why commuters spend longer hours on Lagos roads than in any other part of the country.
To address this development, Uber has announced its readiness to promote the concept of asset sharing in the city. Addressing journalists in Lagos, Ebi Atawodi, General Manager, Uber Lagos, said with asset sharing, Uber drivers are able to transport more riders per trip than before.
“Lagos has about 21 million residents. In the nearest future, there will not be enough cars for everyone. This is why we have to encourage asset sharing,” she said.
Concerning Uber’s operations in Lagos, she announced the app now has ten times more drivers and 100 times more demand than it had six months ago when it began operations in Nigeria.
Ebi said: “People are changing the way they connect with their cities and get around, and we feel Uber is a big part of this revolution. We believe Nigerians should be allowed more choice in the way they travel and with uberX, we now offer unrivalled value for getting around Lagos safely and securely, at the touch of a button.”
She further stated that “To ensure that Uber riders receive the highest quality rides and reliability, all partner drivers have to have a driver institute card and commercial insurance before they are allowed to drive on the Uber system. Further all our drivers are vetted by the Uber team, making Uber the safest way to get around.”
