Vodafone brings M-Pesa to Ghana

Vodafone has launched its mobile money transfer service M-Pesa in Ghana making it the eleventh market across its Africa, Asia and Europe segment. The offering is part of Vodafone Cash that was successfully piloted in August.

The service is already available in Kenya, Tanzania, South Africa, Democratic Republic of Congo, India, Mozambique, Egypt, Lesotho, Albania and Romania.

M-Pesa saw more than 2 billion individual transactions carried out in the six months to September 2015 and its worldwide usage has increased 27pc year-on-year to reach 23.4m active customers, according to Vodafone.

The service, which allows people to send and receive money as simply as sending a text message, has helped to reduce theft and fraud by eliminating exposure to counterfeit notes and insecure money deliveries.

According to Vodafone, the M-Pesa service had seen strong, accelerated growth in East Africa during 2015, most notable in Kenya and Tanzania.

“Vodafone Cash extends the revolution of mobile money to Ghana, liberating our customers from the risks associated with carrying cash at all times. The strong demand for the service following the pilot launched in August shows that Ghanaians greatly value the freedom, peace of mind, security and convenience that M-Pesa offers,” said Vodafone’s Director of Mobile Money Michael Joseph.
