Whatsapp to end support to Blackberry OS

When Whatsapp launched seven years ago, most smart phones ran on the Blackberry and Nokia OS. Today, Blackberry and Nokia are struggling and Whatsapp is a billion dollar company of its own. Not only that, Whatsapp no longer wants to have anything to do with either company’s OS.

By the end of this year, Whatsapp will be ending support for the Blackberry OS as well as for older operating systems. The cross-platform instant messaging company made this announcement in a blog post only a few days after its seventh birthday.

According to the blog post, the company will also be ending support for Windows Phone 7.1, Nokia Symbian S60, Nokia S40, Android 2.1 and Android 2.2. Whatsapp also went ahead to suggest that users using smartphones running on any of the aforementioned operating systems upgrade to a newer Android, iPhone, or Windows Phone before the end of 2016 to continue using WhatsApp.

So if you’ve only got Whatsapp installed on a device that runs on any of the above operating systems, you’re better off making plans to install Whatsapp on a ” newer Android, iPhone, or Windows Phone” asap. If not sometime later this year, you’ll stop receiving updates for your precious messaging app. I don’t think you’d like that or would you?
