Whatsapp update adds Bold, Italics and Strikethrough formatting to messages

Popular messaging platform Whatsapp has added new formatting option to the chat app: now you can use bold, italics and Strikethrough in the messages you share with friends within the app.

News about whatsapp testing these formatting options broke few weeks ago and now it seems we would now be able to do a few tricks while messaging.

Adding these formatting options is easy as it requires addition of some editing characters before and after specific words. This is similar to what is obtainable on Google +, people who use Google+ will find it very familiar.

For bold: you just add an asterisk () before and after the specific words: *Hey

For Italics: add an underscore () before and after the specific word: _hey

While for Strikethrough you add tilde ( ~ ) before and after the word: ~hey ~

Whatsapp was acquired by Facebook two years ago and the app has received one two more updates: the recent ones being the addition of voice calls and ability to share documents. Video calls is also in the works and may be added any time soon.

The new formatting options is applicable to the Whatsapp web client but the formatting will only be seen on chats within the app.
