Could this be the end of bottled or (pure) sachet water as we know it?

The days of throwing bottles and containers may be numbered as it was recently discovered that a company in the United Kingdom is creating ‘edible water blobs’ which hopefully will eradicate the world of plastic waste.

The blob which is called an “Ooho” is an edible water bottle made from a plant seaweed extract, has no natural taste and is biodegradable.

However, it can decompose after four to six weeks if not consumed. The inventors say that these blobs can hold any kind of drink, from water to liquor and are cheaper and faster to produce than plastic bottles. It can also either be torn open and poured out, or simply eaten whole.

According to Business insider UK, the goal of the company is to create waste free packaging and stop billion of bottles from reaching the ocean every year. Commendable.

While I think this is innovation that Nigeria especially needs, with the high consumption of caffeinated drinks and the nonchalant attitude of Nigerians to a well-kept environment, I wonder what distribution channel will be adopted as the Ooho sounds like really delicate product. Also, health wise, how many hands would touch this thing before it reaches the consumer? With a number of cancers surfacing, how safe will i be to swallow a blob, among other concerns? Time I believe will tell.
